Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Contemporary Iranian resistance literature is one of the most prominent manifestations of empathy with oppressed nations, especially the Palestinian people. In the meantime, contemporary poets, using imagery and rhetorical language, have tried to represent the suffering and resistance of the oppressed Palestinian nation in the form of novel metaphors and similes. The aim of the present study is to analyze and compare imagery in the poetry of two contemporary Iranian poets about Palestine, focusing on the frequency and function of the two rhetorical elements of metaphor and simile.

METHODOLOGY: The present study will be conducted using a descriptive-analytical method based on rhetoric and aesthetics of metaphor and simile in a selection of poems by ten contemporary Iranian poets, focusing on the theme of Palestine. The data have been extracted and classified based on qualitative and quantitative content analysis of imagery.

FINDINGS: The studies showed that the frequency of using metaphor in the poetry of most of the mentioned poets is higher. This issue is important from the ideological and symbolic perspective of poets on the subject of Palestine; where Palestine is not known as a geographical region but as a metaphor of an oppressed nation, faith, resistance, resurrection, and uprising against oppression and aggression.

CONCLUSION: The results of the study show that the image of Palestine in contemporary Iranian poetry has gone beyond the level of description and has become a symbolic and rhetorical expression of faith and resistance. Metaphor has received more attention than simile and has assumed an epistemological and ideological function in these poems. In the poems of Ali Moallem Damghani and Tahereh Saffarzadeh, metaphor has received more attention than other poets.
